Ti Nana’s Story: "Doctors Said I'd Never Walk Again"

Updated: Feb 4, 2022

On Saturday, August 29th, 2020 Ti Nana, a friend of myLIFEspeaks and member of our village commUNITY, was in a tragic motorcycle wreck that killed the other motorcycle driver on impact and critically injured both Ti Nana and the driver of the motorcycle she was on. Ti Nana was left with massive wounds to her pelvis and legs, bleeding immensely, and fighting for her LIFE.

We were able to get her to a hospital that would help her after going to several who turned her away. The hospital that finally accepted her had three specialists on call: Ortho, Vascular & General, who took her into emergency surgery.⁣ The fact that doctors with these specialties, ones that we needed, were there and available was in itself a miracle.

Ti Nana survived surgery but was still in very bad shape and needed a lot of blood. Eight people from our village went to Port-Au-Prince to give blood in hopes of helping Ti Nana get more blood.

For context, unlike in the United States hospitals in Haiti don’t keep blood on hand. Usually what happens is in order to get blood you have to find people to “deliver blood” to replenish the blood bank in order to draw some out for the person in need.

That is why commUNITY members and friends went to the capital, a dangerous ride in itself, to give blood on Ti Nana’s behalf so more could be taken out for her.

After several days at this hospital recovering, we transported Ti Nana to another hospital for care, after the one she was at discharged her prematurely due to an influx of gunshot victims after recent violent political protests.

When we got to her she was lying naked in terrible pain and unable to move. We put a mattress in the back of a pickup truck as a makeshift ambulance and transported her to another hospital.

Ti Nana was able to have corrective surgery at this hospital in Carrefour to fix an area that wasn’t addressed at the first hospital. The surgery was successful and went according to plan. Doctors removed the external fixator and repaired the front and back of her pelvis.

Her biggest fear, aside from the pain, was that she wouldn't be able to walk again. We assured her that with time, therapy, and hard work we believed she would be able to.

We continue to thank the Lord for her LIFE and were able to share the Gospel with her and her family during this difficult time. On September 21st, Ti Nana got to come home from the hospital to continue recovering at her aunt and uncle’s house.

It has been a long road towards healing but she is a miracle! She gives thanks and praise to God for her LIFE and wants to thank all of you for praying for her.

This is what family and commUNITY in Christ is - friends, neighbors, citizens of Neply, coming alongside Ti Nana to - spiritually and physically - carry her through this time.⁣

“Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2⁣
