When a friend reached out and told us about 50 children near our village in Haiti who were desperate for food, we knew we had to help. The following is a transcript of our interview with Miracia, the friend in Haiti whose desire to meet a big need resulted in the opportunity for us to help more children survive.
Interview:
Question 1: What inspired you to start a feeding program for the children in your community?
Answer: “One day, as I was visiting the community around our church, I felt a strong sense of God's calling to help these children. It was as if a voice inside me said, ‘Do something.’ I shared this feeling with my husband. I explained to him that God was asking me to do something, but at that moment, his eyes got wide, and he said to stay in prayer and that God would direct me where He wanted me to go. Since then, I began asking God to confirm it by showing me a sign. The sign came to me one night in a dream. In this dream, I saw myself walking through the mountains with a bunch of kids following me step by step. As I got to the top of the hill, I saw an elder man who told me to stop and look around myself. When I turned around, I saw some food placed on a piece of cloth, plenty to share with the children. I woke up determined to make that dream a reality. Starting small, with just a few children, we've grown to feeding 50 kids three days a week.”
Question 2: How has the feeding program impacted the children's lives?
Answer: “Seeing the transformation in these children is incredibly rewarding. Many of them were malnourished when we started. Now, they're healthier and happier. Although I long to get to a place where we can feed the children five times per week instead of only three times per week, I'm grateful for the progress we’ve made. Their improved well-being is a testament to the power of even small acts of kindness.”
Question 3: Can you tell us more about what happens during these feeding sessions?
Answer: “This is an important question. Normally, the main idea is feeding them, but I've realized that if I just give them food without giving them a chance to meet Jesus, giving them the food doesn't do anything for them. Providing food is essential, but it’s just the beginning. We believe in nurturing the whole child. That’s why we've incorporated spiritual and educational elements into our program. Two dedicated members of our church volunteer their time to teach the children about God, read the Bible, sing, and pray with them.”
Question 4: What would you like to say to the donors who have supported this program?
Answer: “I want to thank Missy and Mike [COO and CEO of myLIFEspeaks] for accepting my request and making this happen. I’m also grateful to everyone who has contributed to this life-changing work. Your generosity has made a tremendous difference in the lives of these children. I pray that God will continue to bless all of you and your families. While we've come a long way, there are still so many needs to meet here in Haiti. My prayer is that my family will remain committed to the responsibility God has given us.”
