Culture & In-Country Purchases

During your trip, you will have several opportunities to purchase local items. In order to best budget and prepare, the following is a list of just some local favorites:

Must have cash: Crisp $1s and $5s only

  • Drinks (Coke, Sprite, Limonade, etc.) $1-2

  • Pate (like a Haitian hot pocket- filled with chicken, sautéed with onion and bell pepper) $3 each

  • Fried Plantain $1 each

  • Fresh fruit plates $5

  • Avocado $1

  • Ice Cream $1

  • Lollipops, cookies, candies, and other treats $1+

  • Boat rides $10 per person

  • Customizable bracelets and headbands $10 each

  • Customizable rocks $5-15 depending on size

  • Hair braiding $5+ depending on what you want done

  • Manicure/Pedicure $10 each

  • Massages $5/10 minutes; $10/20 minutes

  • Beach Food- Lobster- $12, Lambi (meat from conch shell) -$6, Fried Plantain - $3; can also buy fresh fruit, drinks, and snacks at the beach. Souvenirs available at beach

  • Haitian Shops – souvenir type stuff (only small bills)​

In addition myLIFEspeaks has a small store of local artisan goods as well as t-shirts, coffee, hot sauce, vanilla, honey, jewelry & Christmas items​. Cash and credit card accepted.

This video is a great illustrated history of Haiti that will put into context some of the underlying issues of this small country. Continue to do more research on your own in preparation for your immersion trip. Please keep in mind that all cultures are different and although we may not understand something, doesn’t make it wrong.

Travel Day Expectations

  • You MUST arrive at the airport 2 hours before your flight

  • Have your passport somewhere safe but accessible

  • Pack two copies of your passport in your luggage in the event it is lost.

  • We suggest filling your water bottle in the last US airport as you will want for the bus ride from the airport to Neply.

  • On your flight to PAP, a white customs declaration form and a green immigration form will need to be completed using a black or blue pen.

  • When going through immigration, have readily accessible:

    • $10.00 “Tourist Tax” cash

    • Passport

    • Completed immigration form

    • The officer will hand back to you with your passport the bottom portion of the green immigration form which you MUST retain for your return flight back home

  • After passing through immigration, proceed to the baggage claim terminals. You must have claim tickets. Rent a luggage carts (1 cart for 2 people) for $2.  Do not accept help from anyone unless you want to tip them.

  • Once all luggage is obtained from the luggage carousel the team leader will collect all white declaration forms and proceed to customs.

  • After passing through customs, you will exit the airport where a myLIFEspeaks staff member will be waiting. 

  • Get ready for an exciting bus ride to myLIFEspeaks campus in Neply!
