Where myLIFEspeaks came from
Mike Wilson first went to Haiti in 2003 with his friend, Brent Gambrell, and a handful of people to Leogane, Haiti to visit the New Missions facility. While there, Mike was overtaken by what he saw and one of the worst things possible for someone who is a public speaker happened: he was speechless.
When he got home, Mike couldn’t quite describe what Haiti was like to his wife and 3 sons. He simply said, “I have to go back,” and he did just that. Mike returned to Haiti in 2005 and led a group of 7 teenagers and 1 more adult to the New Missions facility. What was happening was LIFE changing for Mike. Haiti was quickly becoming something that wasn’t simply somewhere he went, but it was becoming a part of him.
Missy joined Mike in Haiti for the first time in 2007. Her first experience was like Mike’s, on a trip with their friend Brent, but this time there were 40 people and Missy had a hard time taking it all in. They laugh about it now, but Missy was anything but happy with Mike at that time. In fact, they swear that Missy went 3 days in Haiti without speaking to Mike, because she blamed him for taking her to “the poorest place on earth.” That all changed on day when Missy met a little girl named Rachelle. Missy recognized Rachelle from the photo she had received a few years earlier, from New Missions. Rachelle was the little girl who Mike and Missy began sponsoring before his first trip in 2003 (and the same little girl they sponsor to this day!).
Over the past few years many things have happened to Mike and Missy that have drawn their hearts to Haiti. They took their oldest son, Dyllan, to Haiti in 2008 for the first of many trips for him. They have introduced many of their friends and people in their “circle of influence” to Haiti through their association with Brent and BGM. Mike and Missy adopted 2 little girls from Haiti in 2010 and what for most people would have been the final “good Samaritan” deed was another step closer to what they knew was the calling on their LIFE.
Working with BGM since 2003 (Missy) and 2008 (Mike) allowed Mike and Missy the opportunity to visit Haiti multiple times, lead hundreds of people to Haiti, and develop a heart for the people of Haiti. They had the opportunity to be a part of a great organization that taught them to love and respect the Haitian people and they were able to incubate the seed of myLIFEspeaks under the BGM “umbrella” for 3 years. Together with BGM, Mike and Missy worked with thousands of Haitian people in need, fed hundreds of people on a monthly basis in the villages of Kanez and Madame Belizier, and were able to see houses built for widows and orphans in need. Today, New Missions interacts with over 20 schools and churches in villages in Haiti and provides children with an opportunity to have an education, medical care, and food. Likewise, BGM has begun the initiative, A Door to Hope, which continues the legacy of BGM’s involvement in Haiti. Mike and Missy have been beyond blessed to have been a part of these amazing organizations with strong hearts in Haiti.
myLIFEspeaks came from people who cared about Haiti (BGM/New Missions) and is committed to help change Haiti…for the long haul…one child at a time. Are you ready to JOIN us?
